The Istanbul Project came about as the result of an opportunity to live and explore Istanbul for a month. In this work satellite images, photographic images, abstraction developed from layering of imagery and video are used to give a recording of my experiences. A major theme in the work involves my memory of moving through the city through densely populated areas with the ever present piercing blue sky advancing between the roofs, up and down the hills where, suddenly, the Bosphorus, the body of water dividing East and West, Europe and Asia, and for me, recent past and future, opened up before me. The video portion, recorded on a ferry with the distant sound of evening calls to prayer, represents the crossing over before one continues on land with the last of the collage paintings.
